Caring for leather furniture

How to keep your leather furniture clean and protected

Leather furniture is timeless and elegant. A large number of leather lounge suites & chairs are sold here every year which is why it is so important to know how to correctly care for it.

Many people prefer leather as it warms to your body in the winter but yet it is cool and refreshing in the summer. Leather is a very durable and as a result will last longer – it is so durable that most people forget to take care of it properly which can lead to the leather being damaged. Leather should be kept out of direct sun light and direct heat, as overtime this will take out the natural oils from the leather which will most likely cause the leather to crack. Dirt build up is another reason that the leather may crack.

Different types of leather require different cleaning methods. Aniline leather is leather that has been dyed but does not have a coating. This type of leather requires special cleaning products as water can darken and damage the leather. Suede leathers have no pigment but also need a special cleaner with no water; this type of leather needs to be cleaned quickly so that the damage does not become permanent. For any protected/coated leathers these needs to be cleaned with a product containing a neutral ph. Do not use anything containing waxes, silicones or oils as they will eventually damage the leather.

It is recommended that after you clean your leather, you apply a conditioner to put the natural oils back into the leather. The conditioning will also help stop stains and dirt being reabsorbed and will also make it easier to clean.

If you are not sure how to care for your leather or what type it is, it is best to contact a professional so they can advise you the best way to clean and care your leather.
